The French Smock is a relaxed, highly customisable layer with a choice of button placket or zip fastening, different bib shapes, optional bib trim, patch pockets and two garment lengths. Separate pattern pieces accommodate both finer blouse-weight fabrics and thicker outer-layer fabrics.

The cut is deliberately slouchy and square with dropped shoulders, neat sleeves and a simple round neck. It is an intermediate project using techniques such as sleeve plackets and cuffs, flat binding, run-and-fell seams and topstitching.

Recommended fabric
Linen, poplin, lawn, lightweight denim and twill for a 'blouse' version. For a heavier 'outdoor layer' version you can use corduroy, denim, wool suit or a lightweight wool felt.
